from the beginning, paris-based romanian artist mircea cantor has been interested in border zones between art and lfe, economy and society politics and nation, and the various modes of expression (blablabla). for this reason, while some of his works elaborate on a phenomenom tied to a specific place and time, other only allude to his questions of inters, often using an association of ideas.

"I spent several months living at a residence in Innsbruck at the root of the mountain there. One day, using my small camera and a stand, I started to film short videos wherein I documented how I was ascending the mountain. It was possible to shoot only 4-minute videos at once. Here, the idea for the structure of the work was born. –Every new day I would come back where I left yesterday and continue to document my gradual way upwards. This went on as I ascended the ever-steeper mountain path. I also became painfully aware of my personal limits when compared to the grandeur of the mountain.
After more than a month of regular rising, in defiance of myself and in spite of the mountain, this path was the vehicle whereby I reached the top of the mountain. From the top of the mountain the sight of the valley bellow greets one. Rather typical landscape at that, seen on the postcards so very often. However, after a month this particular sight had acquired a new, very personal meaning to me.
Surprisingly, it turned out that it is possibly to reach this mountaintop with a lift, just in ten minutes."

"'All alone among the stars' is an exchange project between two young oak trees of similar size and age, one from 13HA and one from Bialowieza National Park at the border with Belarus. Besides questioning the authenticity of the two forests it tried to illuminate the complex and impossible relationship between them. In contrast to the Netherlands where all nature is constructed, Bialowieza Primeval Park is a natural primeval forest, the largest in Europe."

“riot”, 1999: For the last two months, an anonymous group of young artists have been manipulating company logos on skyscrapers around Frankfurt. First the DG Bank sign was transformed into the legendary Pacman Icon. With the simple addition of a black spot. Next the illuminated type on top of the Marriott Hotel was reduced to a more profane “riot”.”
